That was amazing.  I got choked up listening to it thinking of the troops and the victims and familes at VA Tech.

thanks for posting this. I was waiting to see how she'd do it. She did it like no one else has. I love it. Kat is really stunningly beautiful and everyone at NAB just got their treat.

I thought Kat's version of this was awesome, and it really showed her emotion and special vocal style.

Day-um, that girl is good. She did it just right and played to all her strengths, started it down low and then didn't try to hold the highest note forever, just hit it and ran. This was great, nothing strained, everything right in her best range, just enough fancy stuff to put her own mark on it without overdoing anything... excuse me, I think I'm having an attack of the vapors...

I'm trying to listen to all the Idol versions of this just for the heck of it. So far I've only heard two. Guess which is my favorite.

I hope somebody is able to at least get us the audio from this.

On my SECOND listen I noticed right next to this a video of K. talking to the crowd at the Idol auditions. Do we have links to all of this stuff? IS there an "all of this stuff?" It stopped just as she was announcing she was going to sing "Home," which just shivers my timbers every time I listen to it, so it would be really nice to find the video of this...if it exists.

AMEN.  And thanks CRB.
Sometimes I need reminding that she's just as amazing with the video turned off.

Nicely done... Whitney's version at the Super Bowl is still the standard, but still, very Kattie goodness.

Whitney's arrangement and vocals for the Star Spangled Banner set the bar high for anyone else performing it! However, Whitney's version was pre-recorded and she lipsynched. Our Kat did it accapella live! That's how it should always be done, showing the true feelings of the artist....even if they hit a few "pitchy" notes!

Yeah, Whitney's full orchestral arrangement was really something. Slightly off-topic: did Kat sing the Anthem at an Anaheim Ducks game last week? I heard that an Idol did the honors.

I don't think so because we would have heard about it.  Very little flies under our radar.  Sometimes we don't get the cap of the performance but we know in advance that we are missing it, such as the NEDA performance or the Ford/Adcraft performance that we simply didn't have access to.

Whitney used that popular "click tracking" method (yes, they used that back even in 1991) where you basically sing with yourself. That's necessary when you're singing in a stadium where the voice has to project more. But I remember Whitney really belting the NA. And when you have two belting Whitney's going simultaneously (especially Whitney in her pre-Bobby heyday)--then it was pretty powerful for its time. As you remember (well for those over 15 ), it became a #1 single at the time during the height of the Gulf War. Though, as I've said before, belting the NA doesn't necessarily take as much skill as setting the proper vocal tone for yourself. Here, Kat was all about setting a perfect control of pitch and tone that you don't hear often with singers tackling the National Anthem.

All that unnecessary analysis aside, Kat's version of America's anthem yesterday was awe-inspiring in showcasing the quality of her voice. I think people tend to forget she has one of the greatest vocal timbres in the music industry now...and her doing these type of things (plus the amazing VH1 V-Spot performances released today) instantly remind everybody what she's capable of. There really isn't enough of this type of singing by her on record yet other than a few examples.

It was probably a good thing Kat sang the NA early in the morning--because the voice is usually fresher that time of day to tackle the important "Free" note. She hit it perfectly there...and that echo of the venue just gave you chills as it enchanced Kat's a cappella rendition. And, yes, Kat could do an entire CD a cappella. Why pay those union musicians when you could...ok, now I have union musicians throwing tomatoes at me.

On a serious note: I wonder if Kat and the people there knew about the tragedy at Virginia Tech when she sang this? I guess the word didn't really get out until later Monday morning--but you can imagine the emotion hearing the NA after hearing that devastating news. The reality of war is enough...and Kat brought an amazing patriotic spirit like no other. Too bad some of the media honchos expected to be there were probably still snoring in bed when she sang it...

OMG! SHE SOARED on this song!
This was unbelievable, her vocals were tip top shape, she sounded AMAZING! Excellent voice, excellent poise, great emotions, looked beautiful, pitch was perfect, I mean everything was so Enchanting!
I heard Carrie Underwood sing the National Anthem last year and she sounded Amazing too but I think my favorite national anthem performance as of right now, would have to be Katharine's. I really liked how she didn't just sing the song, she put her own spin on it and made it her own.
This was truly a beautiful site to behold.

My only question is how come a little bit of the beginning is not included?
Other than that though this was excellent.
