From the Dallas News, posted at IDF by Philostone

An invitation to billionaire T. Boone Pickens' birthday party is akin to finding a Willy Wonka golden ticket. Once inside the door, the surprises just keep coming.

Just over 200 people got the coveted summons Tuesday night to Boone's 80th-birthday, black-tie extravaganza at the Dallas Country Club hosted by his wife, Madeleine.

Two years ago, she secretly gathered all his friends in California and brought in Nancy Reagan, Merv Griffin and Arnold Schwarzenegger to surprise Boone while Natalie Cole and Rod Stewart sang.

Bocelli and Brightman

This year, Boone knew she was planning his party, but that was all. So when he walked into the Dallas Country Club on Tuesday evening, he was as surprised as everyone else.

The first clue that something big was cooking came on Monday when sentries secured all entries to the club's ballroom and limousines began delivering the stars for a closed-door rehearsal.

If Monday afternoon shoppers at Highland Park Village cocked an ear to the wind and heard superstar Andrea Bocelli harmonizing with British soprano Sarah Brightman, that wasn't Memorex.

Madeleine dispatched a Gulfstream to Italy to fetch Mr. Bocelli and his wife, Veronica, and bring them to Dallas for Monday's rehearsal and Tuesday's party. Another plane went for Miss Brightman, the former wife of Andrew Lloyd Webber who originated some of his most famous roles, including Christine Daae in The Phantom of the Opera.

American Idol fave Katharine McPhee, who stirred up McPheever among her Idol fans, has toured and recorded with Mr. Bocelli. She opened the evening along with Belgian chanteuse Lara Fabian.

The who's who

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry, former Secretary of Commerce Don Evans and his wife, Susie, were among the select luminaries who arrived to find the interior of the Dallas Country Club reinvented as a Hollywood supper club (think Ciro's, 1952). Every wall was completely blanketed with floor-to-ceiling photographs of Boone's beloved 65,000-acre Mesa Vista Ranch.

Opening the evening, comedian Dennis Miller looked out over the gold-rimmed crystal and the sea of flowers and noted: "Boone is one of the few people who can watch Giant and think it's a home movie. This place makes Caligula look like a minimalist."

Composer and producer David Foster led the band from behind his concert grand piano, playing to guests such as billionaires Annette and Harold Simmons, Houston financier Fayez Sarofim, Wall Street wizard Ace Greenberg, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Rangers and Stars owner Tom Hicks and Mayor Tom Leppert – in short, a group not easily impressed.

But after Ms. Brightman's virtuoso performance, when Madeleine led the blind Mr. Bocelli onstage, a sense of awe fell over the room.

After going through his songbook of classical, pop and opera favorites, Andrea generously invited Ms. Brightman, Miss McPhee and Miss Fabian back up to join him for the evening's finale.

Wow....what a gig! This was the antithesis of a charitable event.....singing for the billionaire/millionaire set!Very prestigous ears, and we can only imagine what someone is paid when money is no object!

I'm guessing David may have organized the concert and, once again,he and buddy,Andrea have thoughtfully included Katharine in the roster of stars.More wonderful VIP exposure for our girl....she's actually too busy for Idol this week!

Yes indeed!

David has talent, taste, style, power and connections. What more could you want in a mentor?

So, did Katharine sing a duet with Lara Fabian? That would've been cool. Here's a sample of the international star's work.

T. Boone Pickens is a famous corporate raider and an oil (and now wind) energy tycoon who helped fund the Swift Boat group that smeared John Kerry in the last presidential election. Texas governor Perry and the Oklahoma governor (I think) are Republicans. I remember that some right-leaning Kat fans were upset about her singing at a Hillary Clinton event, but this proves that Kat is probably apolitical with regard to the functions she performs at.

See what I missed not stopping by here often enough. I am soooo happy for Kat and thanks to DF, she's doing some really worthwhile performing. I can't wait to see her movie and hear her next cd. I am soooo missing Kat a lot. I can only watch the reruns so many times. Plus, she is much more honed now as a performer. I mean, she was good on AI a couple of years ago but now???? She is 10 times better. And under David Foster's tutoledge (is that how you spell it?) she is even going to get much better. Sigh! I miss her.

All performers should be apolitical when it comes to taking gigs, though we all know some out there aren't. But for all we know Kat may be a moderate or could vote either way depending on the issue. That helps in a showbiz career so you don't polarize some of your fanbase with radical views. Barbara Streisand's fanbase could have been double what it already was/is had she not have been so outspoken about her political views, even though she may be right some of the time.

Frankly, T. Boone Pickens sounds like the type of guy who could lead the way into alternative energy here in America. Oregon is already trying out that windmill power system and a company here is intending on capitalizing on it. But, beyond that, I'm glad to see a powerful person not pick performers at his birthday party who only agree with his politics. That happens a lot too, especially for wealthy tycoons who stick with their own kind and think someone being anywhere near them with a differing political belief is anathema on legs.

I don't know if this performance can be filed under "Corporate gig", though I guess it comes close to that considering it's a billionaire. Just about every performer out there does these private functions for a fee. Hopefully Kat's private gig fee is in the six figures now, because she deserves that in the value of her extreme talent. Of course, things like this could be done gratis, too, in the thought that it gets press and keeps Kat in the media spotlight until the tidal wave promotion for "House Bunny" starts.

Edit: Surely someone recorded this on video and will put it on Youtube soon. Hearing Fabian and Brightman with Kat would be quite amazing. Sarah Brightman's voice has matured, but I once considered her to have the greatest voice in the world during her "Phantom" days.
