Hey, Intuitive Eating is certainly working for Kat! And she's still talking it up. I'm not having quite so much success. Maybe if I had an album to record and promote, I wouldn't think so much about food! just kidding. Does anybody have any supportive advice? Maybe if someone else is struggling, we could support each other? The concept makes sense; I'm just having trouble putting it into practice.

Thanks!

Barlo

Well, there's a whole book about it, so it wouldn't really do the program justice to try to tell you in a single post! haha But basically, the thing is to eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full and eat anything you want without guilt. It's the guilt part that's troubling me.

It's called "Intuitive Eating" by Tribole & Resch. Kat mentioned it was part of the recovery she did for her eating disorder. The book's sales really spiked this summer when Kat referred to it in Teen People. Try Amazon.

01/08/2007 3:30 PM Alert

I bought the book back in June, and I've only read the first half, but there's some good stuff in there.  I started cutting back at the beggining of 2006, and I lost about 20-30 lbs before I heard about this book, and I've lost another ~30 since then.  The techniques in the book definitely made things easier.  I wonder what'll happen if I read the second half, lol.  I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who has food issues, even if they're not really overweight.  Remember, Kat looked just fine the way she was when we first saw her at the audition, but obviously she wasn't fine.  Of course she looks even better now that she's taking good care of herself.

I read the book completely in July and then reread certain chapters last fall. I think I've incorporated some philosophies into my life, but I think I'm still missing something. Like I'm exercising so I'll have more strength and endurance for a project this spring rather than exercising strictly to burn calories. And that goal makes it more fulfilling.

Also I'm trying to make healthy choices while letting myself eat whatever I want. Sometimes I'll approach a snack situation when I'm not necessarily hungry and ask myself "WWKD" - What Would Katharine Do? lol And then pick the diet soda! haha

That's great, Sammer.  The thing to remember though is that the idea of Intuitive Eating is not to "diet".  You don't put strict limitations on what you can and can't eat.  And you ignore the "food police" that tells you you've been bad when you eat something "bad" for you.  If you put pressure on yourself to follow a strict diet you will inevitably "cheat" and then feel guilty about it.  It's like what Katharine said, you tell yourself,  "If I eat this donut I will get fat...NO!  If I eat TEN donuts I will get fat".  WIth Intuitive Eating you remove the guilt because you allow yourself to eat whatever you want, in moderation.

Let's say pizza is your favorite food, but you hardly ever eat it because you know it's packed with calories, carbs, etc., so when you do finally break down have the pizza you go crazy and eat the whole thing because you know it will be a long time before you allow yourself to have pizza again.  With Intuitive Eating you can control yourself better because you know ahead of time that you can have pizza anytime you want, so you won't be tempted to eat all the pizza you can while you can.  You can have some now, and you can have some later if you feel like it.  Also listen to your body.  When you reach for that 3rd or 4th slice ask yourself, "Am I full..do I really want this".

As for drinking sodas - I think that's the biggest contributing factor in my recent weight loss.  I completely cut out the regular sodas and I only drink diet now.  I also try to drink water or tea in place of diet soda when I can.

Congrats Big Shady! Meant to say that a few posts ago! LOL You've encapsulated the book very well for not having read the whole thing!

I'm trying to get a friend at work interested. I think someone I eat with often thinking about food and eating the same way as I do will be helpful.
