Can you see if these test videos are viewable on your iPods?
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DRBB7IG0

It's a 13MB zip of 3 short videos. Just tell me which ones worked and I can tell you how to make your own.

Technical details
They came from 3 sources
1. DivX avi, vinman. Randy diss IBICF (cut)
2. mpg, trist full High Def. meaty duet (cut)
3. XviD avi, the kind BigShady and I make. OW from EPK with modified audio (cut)

converted to mp4 with MPEG-4 video, AAC audio. I started with Apple's iPod specs (http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html) as a guideline and used SUPER to convert.

I made some a while back with Super and I noticed the aspect ratio was distorted.  The people that I made them for liked them but  I didn't like turning out substandard (slightly distorted files) and quit making them.

Ideally, I would love to have top notch ipod vids of all the performance stuff to put into the Vinman sticky because this format is only going to get more popular with time.

Meatloaf doesn't look any more or less portly in this sample than in trist's. For anyone out there who wants to give it a shot on their own, I used the settings in the screenshots below. I just realized I'm still using the old version of Super oops. http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

16:9 (widescreen dimensions like AI vids from trist, vinman)

03/04/2007 3:27 PM Alert
I got a few ipod videos from the Overmused cache, just to fill in holes in my video collection,  before they were taken down, I know it was a popular source for ipod media, and the specs for them look like this

Format: Apple MPEG4 Decompressor, 368 x 208, Millions AAC, Stereo (L R), 48 000 kHz

Movie FPS: 29.97

Additional information from GSpot say this:

Video

kbps 778   Qf 0.338  SAR 1.774 (39.22)

I was trying to find a Super setting that got close to these when I got the distorted output.

The question is do the people who watch these things want maximum video quality at the expense of file size or do they want them at some moderate quality such that the files are smaller?  I don't personally have an ipod and don't know what an ipod users preference would be.

Since I had these Overmuse files handy I just tried to create files that were near to that spec when I made my stab at creating ipod media.

These videos (Overmuse sourced ones) look very nice at there native resolution, which is what the ipod would run them in and I assume they were created by an ipod user for fellow ipod users, hence my attempting to use them as a template.

If you look at the specs for the ipod display you find:

Display

  • 2.5-inch (diagonal) QVGA transflective, over 65,000-color liquid crystal display with white LED backlight
  • 320 by 240 pixel resolution, .156-mm dot pitch
  • Support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously
So I suspect that anything much in excess of this is wasted resolution.  Is a 640 X 368 resolution really going to buy you anything on a 2.5 inch display that can only show 320 X 240?

I just used the HD I Have Nothing that I got from the Superior Pics board to make a ipod video with the specs that you had outlined in those Photobucket  gifs and it is  ~47 Mb.   In contrast,  the ones from Overmuse range from ~16 MB for Kat and Tay sing Time Of My Life up to ~27MB for the Girls Medley from the finale.  So I'm pretty sure that for ipods the specs in those gifs of yours are overkill, diff.

I'll tell you what on a 24" monitor at full screen the one I just made blows away the Overmuse video but does that matter?  Do ipod users care about resolution that looks good on a monitor that big?

In the meantime  hrprincessaz  at IDF put up a bunch of ipod vids on Feb 7th.

You're right about 640 being a bit much. I was going off max specs from 'Video" at http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html
and completely ignoring the "Display" 2.5 inch, 320x240

Well, if the 640x480 samples I put up work, then the 320x240 should be no problem. So all we need is an iPod user to get Super, convert some regular videos we have with the settings I used, test them to make sure, then upload, post, and CRB will update the thread. easy!

diff, did you ever figure out what the specs should be for these ipod videos so that they can fill the 320 X 240 pixel screen in while keeping the original aspect ratio. Clearly we want something close to the Overmused (368X208) vids in size but with maybe with a little higher bitrate if that makes any difference at 2.5 inches. Could you play around with Super (or some other program) and figure out how to keep them from being distorted ( aspect ratio wise ) in the output. Or figure out some size that is close that can produce undistorted output with SUPER. I'd really like to have ipod videos available but I don't want to end up doing a hack job on them.

I was hoping someone with an iPod could check out the samples I posted. But I'll check things out later. Doesn't look like Super has a 320xSomething and 16:9, maybe have to use ffmpeg directly instead of through Super. Is it possible to choose 352x288 (or whatever) and also select 16:9 and/or uncheck "Stretch It" and/or play with "Crop/Pad"? I've been busy with some other non Kat-related capping. fear.gif I feel like I'm cheating on her.

CaRo can you try these please? They're just tiny snippets, total 13MB zip of 3 videos
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DRBB7IG0

STWOM tiny snippet:
http://s6.quicksharing.com/v/3053752/STWOM_16_9_nopad.AVI.html

If these work, then it'll help get all vids to iPod format easier.

CRB: I tried various conversions of a vinman vid but the "pad" isn't doing what I thought it would, so it doesn't work. I can use 320x240 and 16:9 aspect (STWOM above), but only VLC is smart enough to read the "16:9" and play it at the correct 16:9 aspect. WMP, MPC and Quicktime are too stupid and play it at 320x240, 4:3.

Thanks CaRo! Even though it didn't work, it helps. Does the STWOM video look normal? Ryan should not look stretched.

The first image below shows what a correct vid would look like. The second one is what you might see, but that would be bad.
correct 16:9 aspect

Hey diff, I got some feedback on the ipod stuff over at idf and here is the post and my reply:

QUOTE(hrprincessaz @ Mar 9th 2007, 11:39 PM) *

Hey CRB, sorry I haven't been around too much the last couple days, so I just saw this now.

I think it really depends on the size of the iPod you have, and what you use it for. I have the 60GB model, and currently have 25.13 of music on mine.. so that still leaves me with lots of room for videos and pictures. I don't know if I'll ever actually fill it up, so I prefer the higher quality larger video files if I can find them. Someone with the 80GB model would probably be the same way - but if I had the 30GB model, with over 25GB of music... the larger video files would limit me.

FYI, the quality of all of my iPod videos is pretty consistent, being mostly HQ. I started downloading them from a different source with The Voice Within, and he wasn't including the judge's commentary at the end.. so that's why the major difference in filesize (the earlier files averaged around 5 - 6 minutes, while the latter were around 2 min).

As for the aspect ratio, I really don't have a preference, but I think the original HD aspect ratio is easier on the eyes when viewed on my computer, so I'd probably go with that one if I had the choice.

ETA: I just realized you said I Have Nothing was 40MB. It is? The version I have says 14.3MB.. unsure.gif

Thanks for the feedback, so highbit rate versions in the original 16:9 aspect ratio. Thanks for the feedback hrprincessaz.

Moving into the future the bigness of the files likely won't be an issue because storage costs are pretty much in freefall at this point. An interesting point is that the ipod specs say that videos up to 640X480 are playable. And high bitrate (up to ~2200kb/sec) recordings of that size actually stand up quite nicely to full screen computer viewing as well. Perhaps making vidoes of the highest quality possible that are still playable on an Ipod might be the way to do this. I mean we are talking about Katharine McPhee performances after all...can they really ever be too good. original.gif

Can anyone pls Re-Upload them all? Esp for the Kat's PRE-TOP12 Performances? Bcoz all those links weren't available anymore. And Oh! how bout Kat's Video Blogs MP4s?? It's weird that i always can change Kat Top12 vids. AVI. Windows Media File to Mp4, but when i want to change the Kat video blogs.flv.Avi to mp4 or quicktime, they didn't have sounds.. Why can that happen?

After countless test runs and using a poor (but willing )  IDFer as my  test subject, I present my version of Kat's AI5 performance iPod videos.

For source files I used the HD MPEG files, if I had one and if not then I used Vinman's divx file. Vinman's files are comprehensive (intro, performance and judging) and I converted a couple as comprehensive and they were too massive that way, so I just edited to only the performance of song and since all the HD stuff is performance only anyway the set is consistant.

There  are 30 total files and 1.25 GB combined size:

1. God Bless The Child ( Audition comprehensive clip)

2. I'll Never Love This Way Again ( Hollywood Round No.1 comprehensive)

3. My Funny Valentine ( Hollywood Round No.2 w/ kissing judges)

4. Since I Fell For You

5. All Is Fair In Love

6. Think

7. Until You Come Back To Me

8. Come Rain Or Come Shine

9. The Voice Within

10. Bringing Out The Elvis

11. Who Wants To Live Forever

12. Someone To Watch Over Me

13. I Have Nothing

14. Against All Odds

15. Black Horse and the Cherry Tree

16. Hound Dog/All Shook Up

17. Can't Help Falling In Love

18. I Believe I Can Fly

19. Somewhere Over The Rainbow

20. I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues
21. Think (Top 3 Results)

22. Black Horse and the Cherry Tree (Top2)

23. Somewhere Over The Rainbow (Top2)

24. My Destiny

25. I Made It Through The Rain

26. It's All Coming Back To Me Now

27. Girls Medley

28. (I've Had) The Time Of My Life

Big Shady told me that the two files JC Penney Jam files didn't import to the iPod.  So be warned that these might not work.  I'll make some new ones and post them at some point.
