What's the secret to Katharine McPhee's 'American Idol' success? The singer tells AOL Music that song selection is highly important. "When I was in competition I always thought, 'Okay, you've gotta get a big powerful song to show people you can sing.' And that's always the way I approached 'Idol.'"
Now that McPhee has catapaulted from 'Idol' to her own career though, she's able to stretch out a bit. "This is my record and I can do really whatever I want," she says. And she's particularly excited about some of the album's more adventurous numbers. "I'm excited about up-tempo songs that are kind of girly, just fun. Like 'Not Ur Girl' and 'Love Story' -- definitely 'Open Toes,' especially when the breakdown comes at the very end. I'm telling you, just to listen to that vamp."
She's hoping people appreciate getting to know all sides of her musical persona. "I hope people take from this record a little bit more of a sense of who I am," she says. "I think people will really walk away going, 'Oh, this is the Katharine that we didn't get to see on 'Idol.'" As for what she takes from her debut? "I walk away with just a sense of accomplishment, really happy with what I did.
I think what she's trying to say is that you need to pick songs that show off your voice. That doesn't necessarily mean huge power ballads. Because something like "Think" showed Kat's voice off great. Even BHATCT did that.
You just have to pick singer's songs. Because say Kat chose to sing Open Toes on Idol. It's a fun song but not something you'd sing on that show. But she could do Home, Ordinary World (most definitely), Better Off Alone....even something like Love Story would work as an uptempo ditty.
