Once was a day when rock stars were badly behaved. Then, about five years ago, SELF began featuring musicians on the cover and in our pages and celebrating the fact that these women were body inspirations: Beyoncé, Sheryl Crow and the new crop of idols like Carrie Underwood and Katharine McPhee. Now, for the first time, Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue features a gorgeous Beyoncé on the cover. It's accepted wisdom that a woman who makes a living singing, appearing in videos and onstage and screen, has to take good care of herself. Great care. Eating well and exercising and doing yoga and being healthy are now so much the accepted norm for entertainers that it's a striking, horrifying contrast when Britney Spears self-destructs and shaves her head, entering and exiting rehab like it's a revolving door.
The truth is, being healthy (living the SELFy life) is what most women want to do, and the new glamour comes from the inside out...being your best, living a life in balance. I feel sorry for Britney. She looked so great on Letterman when she emerged post-baby, showing off her lean legs and neat bob. In that one moment I thought she was up for the job of SELF cover girl. But instead we chose McPhee. Here is a preview of her, seeing her upcoming cover for the first time. Take a look. She is so beautiful. So healthy, happy and positive. I can think of no better role model for our music issue. Stay tuned.
