LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee is set to make her feature film debut as the star of the indie dark romantic comedy "The Last Caller."
Penned by Michael Albanese, the story is described as a coming-of-age tale about a self-obsessed woman (McPhee) who searches for love, hope and meaning during a few random events with other urban seekers.
"This is the first thing that I read that I really wanted to do," said McPhee, who added that the role doesn't involve singing. "I'm up for a couple of big studio projects, but they weren't starring roles. I wanted to start off doing something a little different. It's something that a lot of people wouldn't expect me doing."
In fact, the Southern California native said the film's protagonist "is definitely a little darker than me."
McPhee, who was edged out by Taylor Hicks as winner of the fifth season of "American Idol," landed at No. 2 on the Billboard chart with her self-titled album debut on RCA/19 Recordings. Her first single, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny," debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot Singles chart.

the film will start shooting in the fall in NYC
The distribution arrangement...it'll get out there. It just probably won't be super wide release unless it really becomes a hit in the bigger cities. So if you don't live near New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago or one of the really big cities...you'll probably have to wait for the DVD to see it. I'm sure they'll release on DVD. Everything gets released on DVD these days.
I think it's smart for her to start in a smaller movie as the star. It'll let her show what she's got to everyone in Hollywood more than being a small character in a big movie ever would.
This clearly isn't Dreamgirls OR From Justin to Kelly. Dreamgirls was a major, major picture with superstars. From Justin to Kelly was a silly cashgrab. This is a chance for Katharine to show if she can carry a movie. And I love that it's a dark comedy. Should let her show she can do drama & comedy all in one movie.
