From PopJustice.com:

Notes on the Katharine McPhee single
Story filed Wednesday, 13 June 2007
» It is today's Song Of The Day.

» It's called 'Over It' and it sounds quite a lot like Jojo's 'Too Little To Late'.

» It is not a complete carbon copy of the Jojo single because despite being basically the same song it is THREE TIMES BETTER. Also it is sung by someone reasonably unugly rather than a dwarf with an outsized head.

» It has been on the Popjustice office stereo at least once a day for what seems like an eternity.

» The best thing about the promo CD single we've been sent is that track two is a ten-second 'callout hook' (like the Avril one here), meaning that when the radio edit has finished we are treated to a quick and untrumpeted burst of the chorus. It is a bit like an encore, but on a CD. We demand more encores on CD singles.

» The video is eye-wateringly shit, but you can't have everything.

» The album's not exactly the greatest thing in history, either, although it sounds like a work of genius next to the new Kelly Clarkson 'opus'. Maybe it needs a few tries instead of our handful of abortive attempts at listening which all ended up with us flicking back to 'Over It' within twelve seconds of any other song starting.

» It's out over here at the end of July having been knocking around in far-flung places like 'America' for a very long time.

» We realise none of the above is really what you might term 'news' but sometimes it's good to take a breather and just catch up on things, don't you think

Well, they didn't praise the whole album but apparently they love the single!  And they think it's better than Kelly's new CD lol.  SNAP!

Not a bad review. ?? Of all the things I'd never expect to hear Katharine called, "reasonaby unugly" rates right up there. And I guess Warren Buffett isn't exactly on welfare.

The Brits do have a way with words, don't they?
But hey, we can't all be as good-looking as Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder..... and should no way be part of a music review in the first place.

In my entire life, I've taken two pictures that I didn't want to immediately consign to the flames, so I don't comment too much on people's looks unless I can say something reasonably unhorrible. However, in this day and age, pop music isn't just about music. In fact sometimes I wonder if it's about music at all. As I've said, it seems to be far more about style, attitude, presentation, and incidentally, maybe, music. So a (very) reasonably unugly girl like Katharine tends to get noticed and commented on. And that doesn't really bother me at all, except when somebody makes one of those idiotic statements about her being famous for being famous. Her initial claim to fame was that SHE NEARLY WON THE BIGGEST SINGING CONTEST IN THE WHOLE DAMN WORLD. In fact some people think she did but that's neither here nor there.

Yeah, it's sad really that everything boils down to looks or style, instead of content these days. I was thinking that someone as gifted as Cass Elliott (Mamas and Papas for you youngsters out there) would never be allowed in a group nowadays. Just think of all the beautiful music we would have missed, just because she wasn't beautiful in a conventional way.

I was a huge "Romeo Void" fan in the 80's ('Nvr Say Nvr') and I was very upset that the record company wanted to replace Debora Iyall just because she was a bit heavier than your normal lead singer. Ever since then, I always try not to factor in looks in my determination if a person is talented or not.

I know that Kat is a beautiful girl, but for me it kind of diminishes her talent when I read an article or review and the bulk of the piece is centered on her looks, not her amazing talent. I guess it's the age in which we live.

Wow I loved Romeo Void! Saw them live and they were amazing! My fav was always FlashFlood! Great Great song !! But you are right she was one unattractive woman and in the dawn of the video era it was very difficult for her. But it would have been a terrible shame if she never got to record because of her looks. We could use bands like them in today's pop music. Instead we get crap like Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston yuk!

Yep.  Romeo Void were a great band, and they proved that one doen't have to be beautiful to front a band.  I've been listening to a lot of the 80's bands lately and their stuff holds up remarkably well.  I must say that I am a bit predjudiced because I remember that era very, very fondly.  I worked in a cool night/dance club for most of the 80's in W. Covina CA... and that has been my favorite job that I ever had.  We played all the cool dance groups of the day; Romeo Void, Depeche Mode, Flock of Seagulls, Visage, early Ministry before they went hardcore, etc, etc.  I agree.  We could use music like this again....

Without naming a lot of names, I think the "looks" thing is more than just looks in general, it centers around weight. Some of the top names in pop right now are undeniably gorgeous and some aren't. But they are mostly svelte and wear clothes like models and project sexiness like mad. Wouldn't call them skinny, but they sure aren't the opposite either. Evidently there's some kind of flap going on around Jordin Sparks right now. Don't ask me for details, all I know is what I read in USWeekly. It has nothing to do with her voice or her overall "cute factor." It's purely about her weight.

Yeah... I read in some publication that called Jordin a "plumper"!!!  I don't get that at all.  She is healthy, that's all.  But, I'm a poor one to judge.  I like 'em on the meaty side.  I, to this day, think that Kat looked her best (weight wise) at her AMIDOL audition.  I still think she is wonderful, but is a touch too skinny for my tastes.
