I see an alert thread was already created about this in here--but I received next week's TV Guide in the mail today and scanned the new Kat article for everybody. But please buy the issue too so I don't get TV Guide on my case if they're looking in.

It's a section devoted to the 'AI' auditions this summer--and Kat's experiences there last year that she really hasn't addressed in an interview yet. Some interesting new insights into how she beat the 'AI' system in not arriving early that day. Also, we learn that she had to do an audition before the audition with producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz (say that multiple times without tripping up)--who apparently wasn't exactly complimentary at first. The article says Kat sang 'Run To You'...and another song she couldn't remember at this audition before seeing Simon, Paula and Randy. Kat points out you have to impress the producers before you even see the famous judging triumvirate.

Too bad we didn't get any video footage of Kat singing 'Run To You.' I have a feeling she bested Whitney's version as she did 'IHN.'

Here's the scan:

Edit: Scan made larger for easier readability...

Wow, I didn't realize that you have to jump through that many hoops to get to Simon, Paula and Randy.  It's obvious that you have to do something to get their attention though.  Whether good or bad...they don't want average.  "Run To You"....hmmm.  OK, funny they told her to do Whitney Houston there and then....what happened with Katharine's Whitney Houston experience later.

Sorry for the scan being a bit crooked to fit the frame. I had some trouble keeping the mag straight in the scanner tray for some reason. Let me know if anybody has trouble reading it--and I'll do another scan.

It makes me curious what the other song was that Kat sang at the audition to the audition. And I wonder how many of us actually knew Kat had an audition to the audition? I had no idea everybody has to do that before performing for RandyPaulaSimon. Perhaps that's part of the role-playing 'AI' does in order to create an almost half-truth environment for the sake of entertainment. They may want to make it look like the auditoners come in and sing for the judges without ever having any prior association with the show. This makes me think that Kat probably carefully chose 'GBTC' to sing in San Fran rather than just already knowing it by heart. But the same assumption could be made with this situation too.

From this, you can tell Kat seemed to understand a lot of the whole process of 'AI' while first going in. Based on her quotes there, she understood that they want people to look a little plainer so they can create the scenario of making them look more glamourous during the show later. It explains why she didn't stylize her hair or wear good-looking clothes during that audition now...as beautiful as she still was.

A sharp person you are, Kat. Figuring out some of the mind games of 'AI' early was obviously to your benefit more than we initially thought.

Thanks for taking the time to scan that, Greg. I think we can add the word shrewd when talking about Katharine. I'm glad she downplayed her looks at the auditions. Watching her seemingly transform right before our eyes was one of the highlights of the whole show. This article also confirms her acting skills .

for the first audition, they don't actually tell you WHAT to sing, but they might ask you to sing another song (as was the case with katharine apparently). i auditioned this season & during the auditions, i noticed lots of girls singing whitney & most of them were asked to sing another song. some girl only sang a few notes of "i will always love you" before they cut her off to sing something else.

I enlarged the scans above and added the second page showing the insanity of the auditions this last month. I think some of those people need to take Kat's advice and not try to be so ostentatious. After Kat set the ultimate standard, we'll probably get a better idea this next season of who's going to progress and who won't based on how they conduct themselves like Kat did.

Very interesting insight there, Vanfan. All the best to you in pursuing your singing dreams.

It's a real eye-opener for me that there was a whole other process before the process. I wonder why Kat kept that aspect quiet all this time? In fact, many of former idols do. Maybe 'AI' tells them to for a while so the watching public can have the illusion that people just walk in and start auditioning for the judges. Although I think we all knew there had to be some kind of process before they got there. It's the process of singing a song they apparently choose for you that's been kept the major secret.

I hope some contestants try to be a little more creative in their song choices. After all, there are a lot of good songs out there that weren't sung by Whitney. And Kat's already said elsewhere (in imparting advice for this year's auditions) that you should always sing what you're capable of doing. Look at Kat's 'GBTC.' A very simple song when it comes to range--but full of powerful emotion.  Some singers still mistakenly think that it's all about range instead.

I am really impressed by Katharine's audition savvy. It is clear she is knowledgable about the entertainment business and has had alot of experience with the auditioning process (paid her dues).

When we see clips of the auditions and there are thousands of hopefuls screaming and saying, "I'M THE NEXT AMERICAN IDOL!" you don't get the impression that many of them are well prepared or have any chance other than dumb luck to get through to the next round.

But even as prepared as Kat was for the first audition, she still froze up a bit due to nerves. I'll bet that happens alot. It reminds me of when Gedeon forgot the words to the group song in hollywood.

I've been watching all of the season 5 performances lately (of all the idols). They just showed a frustrated Simon saying to the hopefuls, "If you forget your lyrics there is a 99% chance that you'll be going home."

Gedeon forgot the words and started ad-libbing and Simon turned to Paula and chuckled, "He's covering up."

On a side note: I have watched every performance from every contestant outside of the top 10 and here are a couple of observations I have.

* Katharine is head and shoulders above everyone outside the top 10, although I think a couple of them are very talented.

* I have the same reaction watching Kevin Covais' performances as I do watching Taylor Hicks' performances. With a furrowed brow and a crooked smile, I am equally confused as I am amused. Sort of like watching an SNL skit that has an quirky main character but just isn't that funny.

Thanks Greg for scanning the article! It's definitely worth a read. Now I'm curious to hear Kat's version of Run to you, it's amazed me that even someone as talented as our girl still got so nervous at the audition, you gotta prepare well I guess!
Kat no doubt knows very clear about the entertainment business, her choice of the wardrobe at the audition and her attitude towards the show were great, relax, comfortable and showed the producers and judges her pure talent!

My one question about the audition.  Since we know now that she went up there with Nick...and stayed at his parents house the night before...why didn't we see HIM in the audition clips?  We saw Peisha...but no Nick.

I guess she didn't want to explain who he was to Ryan or something....mom was plenty.  Probably a good move considering this was the first time we saw her on the show.  I realize that she says that he wasn't her "boyfriend" at that point but...probably wouldn't have been the best move to introduce your 41-year old boyfriend to the world at the audition phase.

Anyway, it was still a stunner to me the first time I heard about it.  I'm totally cool with it now but...initially I was like, "Huh?  What?  Her boyfriend's how old?"

Maybe I misunderstood...but I thought Kat was referring here to Nick taking her to the pre-audition. That's the day she said she skipped the Faith Hill concert to audition for 'AI.' This was when 'AI' apparently gave her 'Run To You' to sing...and that mystery second song she couldn't remember. It must have been a pretty bad song to forget that easily. Too bad they couldn't take from Kat's own audition grab bag. She probably has a whole long list of perfect songs to sing for an 'AI' audition without having to make yourself look like you're full of vocal histrionics that are beyond some people's ability.

The day she actually sang for Randy, Paula and Simon is when Peisha was with her. And, it makes you wonder if Kat sat down with Peisha and told her that the show was about role-playing and that she'd have to play the role of being the 'stage mother.' That probably wasn't easy for Peisha to have to put on that pretense or set that image for herself. Obviously, she had to endure some unnecessary criticism because of that until Kat revealed that she had to create that 'story' for herself for the sake of 'AI's entertainment factor. I assume Peisha knew that was the role she'd have to play when she went with her to the Cow Palace in San Fran.

As far as Nick: He's always been in the background and kept quiet about their relationship to this day. In fact, nobody even seems to talk to him when he's seen backstage during the m&g's...which must feel disconcerting. He may be afraid of what people think of him, when he shouldn't be. But when you live in a stigmatized world--you can't be too careful.

If he was there at the Cow Palace...he must have waited around outside until it was over. And if security came up to question him with his reply that he was Kat's boyfriend....well, did I say we live in a stigmatized world?

Thanks for scanning and posting that, Greg.  I don't subscribe to TV Guide and wouldn't get to read that if not for your post.

I love reading an article that shows just how smart our girl really is.  She's a very clever, logical girl.  We all know it here, but the average person would not know, base on what they see or read about Katharine.

They didn't include it in this article, but Kat was smart enough to know that it's good to have some sort of "backstory" that will help the viewers and producers remember you as a contestant.  She admitted that she exaggerated Peisha's "stage mother" role, which really did help her early in the audition.  Of course, it came back to haunt her a little when people started to label Peisha.  But Kat and Peisha are both big girls who know that sometimes you gotta just play the game.

Yay TV Guide!

"Haha! I love your comments. You just wait there will be more of Kat in Glasses! ha! I love the pic of Nena in glasses. DID you do that? Clever is so! XX kat"

It's obvious that Katharine did her homework before she went to the audition...she knew how to play the Idol "game" before she got there.

I still remember somebody saying something about Katharine not being very intelligent after her "Until You Come Back To Me" post-interview (which wasn't one of her best, I'll admit)....this girl's really sharp.  That's pretty obvious to all of us who've followed her so closely all this time I know but...

I think her crazy nervous fits in the first couple performance episodes gave people the wrong idea.  I thought she was adorable when she was freaking out with nervous energy.

I don't know...I'll still never know why anybody got a bad impression of Katharine...I never saw any of it...perhaps I was blinded by the Katharine light but...

Kat's a very intelligent girl! See all the choices she made during the show, she's just true to herself and be honest. Maybe they took her nervous fits as a way of silly, but I could never see that, the way she was a little freaking out because of nervous and excitement was just so cute.
