Eek!

So the theme is British Invasion tonight...it should be a very good show. I wouldn't be surprised if Sanjaya sports a mohawk.

So we have parts of Kat in four of this year's contestants! Jordin's personality, LaKisha's song selections, Haley's dresses and Sanjaya's hair! LOL All together they still don't equal the real deal!!

I'm afraid.

Afraid that Sanjaya has just made the Top 10 with that performance.
Phil or Stephanie might be going home instead.

I sure hope I'm wrong!

March 20th, 2007
Theme: British Invasion
Top 11 Performances

My favorite:
Melinda Doolittle --"As Long As He Needs Me"

As Long as He Needs Me

(Shirley Bassey, 1960, single UK #2)

Lyrics

As longs as he needs me
I know where I must be
I'll cling on steadfastly
As longs as he needs me

As long as life is long
I'll love him, right or wrong
And somehow I'll be strong
As long as he needs me

If you are lonely then you will know
When someone needs you you love them so
I won't betray his trust
Though people say I must
I've got to stay true just
As longs as he needs me

If you are lonely then you will know
When someone needs you you love them so
I won't betray his trust
Though people say I must
I've got to stay true just
As longs as he needs me

------

Not that I'm a huge fan of Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones, but their songs stood out tonight with Melinda and Jordin, respectively. Talking about good song choices, I think everyone did just fine this week. Nobody was really off. Voters will have to vote for their one favorite and must stick with him/her.

My 2 Cents:
After tonight's performances, I'm absorbing these 5 very well. They are the best of the group.

1. Melinda --As Long As He Needs Me (Shirley Bassey)
2. Jordin --I Who Have Nothing (Tom Jones)
3. Blake
4. Lakisha
5. Chris Sleigh

Gina and Stephanie --didn't improved very much but were ok.
Sanjaya --proved he could sing and perform strongly. The shocker! The most improved contestant!
Chris Richardson --showed a different side of himself, chose a good song, but "sang nasally".
Phil Stacey --could perform covers but "didn't have the grit"
Haley Scarnato --sang and danced well, being flirtitious at times. Next most improved!

Most unfair judging:
It's not true that Lakisha looked 50-ish. She looked a rich matured woman with those diamonds.
It's not true that Gina sounded horrible. Rockstars sing that way.
It's not true that Stephanie sounded old. Singing a classic Dusty Springfield melody will sound so.

Entertained vs. Judging??
From Simon to Haley: "Everyone will talk more about you than your singing".
Simon could have appreciated Haley's improvement from last week. But now, Simon will surely remember Haley's name after that performance. Good job, Haley!

Conclusion:
Phil Stacey is going home, not Sanjaya, not Haley. Sorry.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

Great review Mattsie!  I agree with everything except, Sanjaya being most improved - he was better.  They all did seem to be a little more comfortable.  Haley looked adorable tonight, I think Simon got a little excited.   You forgot to add the little girl in the audience, that was just priceless during Sanjaya, and at the end of the show - it made for great TV.

Unfortunately, I think it may be Stephanie or Phil going home - I think Sanjaya may be on the tour.

I may be turning into SImon's son...but I don't think Sanjaya improved at all tonight...despite singing A LITTLE LOUDER. It was still a bad performance of 'You Really Got Me'--and I have a feeling The Kinks were burying their heads in their hands if they happened to be watching.  At least it had some good energy. Though I agree with those who say he looks awkward up on stage. He needs to practice doing some dance moves or something if he wants to keep performing. Fat chance he'll get a gig post Idol, though, after all the internet mockery.

Despite my saying that--the girl who was crying in the audience was the model for what I've said has been saving Sanjaya: Young teenage girls. It seems that crying girl, however, was a fan of all the contestants...which gives us a good indication how far of a reach this show is on the younger demographic. Or, she just had something going on that's emotional in her life. Her emotions weren't typical of how most people would act without some kind of catalyst behind it.

Whether an indication of Sanjaya's voting base or not: I agree with those of you who think he's inevitably going on tour with the bunch next summer. I picked Sanjaya anyway to be eliminated...though now I think it'll be Phil. So it'll be a one-point loss for me rather than hitting it on the nose. I liked Phil's 'Tobacco Road' ok, though it was the second weakest of the night next to Sanjaya.

With the negative out of the way, I thought this was THE best night of the season so far. I loved 9 out of the 11 of the performances--and I thought they all did a good job of picking material that suited their styles. Ironic that the worst contestants did much better. You can be sure they know that, though, and they upped the ante to make sure they'd survive another week. There's something about the songs from the British Invasion that are more accessible. I don't know what it is, but it may be because it was the last of the era where you could sing contemporary, yet still show off vocal chops.

The Best Three: The same as Mattsie's choices above. Jordin gets better and better as I knew she would. She was actually my favorite of any of the females tonight. That performance of 'I Who Have Nothing' came very close to matching some of Kat's performances in both purity of voice and stage presence. Melinda was nearly tied with her 'As Long As He Needs Me.' That's originally from a famous West End musical from the 60's called 'Oliver!' that was based on 'Oliver Twist.'  Blake's performance of 'Time of the Season' (I think we've heard that one too many times in commercials lately) really was good, though I wasn't knocked over by it. If you want the hippest possible performance, it was at the top of the list. How much longer can he do the beatbox thing before it becomes an overused gimmick? If he did away with that on some performances, he could just showcase his dance moves.

I still stand by my pick of Jordin winning now. She has the whole package 'AI' looks for--which may be both good and bad. They want that teen demographic, and Jordin will do that for them under a contract...that she'll probably break free from like Kelly C. did.

the beatbox gimmick is Blake's thing just as the motown gimmick is for Melinda's thing. She doesn't change it up, either you know. I don't mind Blake's stuff one bit. In fact, i can't wait for him to do MORE beatboxin'. It's his style, let him be who he is. It's not tired at all. He's the one i look forward to most.

if any gimmick is the most tiring it's the "end on a big note". Is that what it takes these days to win Idol? Just having a powerful and loud voice?

^That end on a big note thing is definitely what 'AI' looks for. Even Simon would admit to that...and he's jaded. And I can just hear Simon say to Blake: "You're too innovative for 'AI.'" After all, he even said that Kat was too good for the show. He lets the show be what it is...and the most mainstream performer who can sell the most records is what they look for over originality.

That's why I agree with your assessment that Blake will probably sell more records than the others. Though as I said in the 'Blake Fans' thread, I'm wondering how well that'll translate on a CD. A DVD performance of his entire act would be great and highly popular probably. I'm not sure his voice would have a long life just being heard in a recording studio.

As far as the beatbox gimmick--things that deviate from vocal pryotechnics seem to get worn out with average people out there. I like what Blake does with that effect, but he should probably do it only occasionally rather than on every single song. It's good to have multiple tricks you can use to show diversity and not look like you only do one type of thing over and over. Even Taylor kept himself from going into spastic dance moves on EVERY song last year.

Sure, Melinda plays up the Motown sensibility, but it's what grabs most people out there.

I'm just showing the reality of how a lot of people think. It may ultimately come down to what's safe winning over something that's truly musically innovative.

The latest dialidol numbers has Sanjaya  in fifth place, ahead of Jordin, with Haley, Gina, Chris S and Stephanie clustered at the bottom. Phil actually has the second highest votes!

Oh lord, that HAS to be DialIdol being unreliable again, Bill, and turning into what they always want to be: The 'AI' Oracle. After Jordin's great performance last night, I'd have to believe that 'AI' would just place her in the Bottom Three for dramatic effect as they usually do anyway. Though I have a feeling that our Top 12 lists here are mostly all wrong...and we may see a bunch of twists and turns on the show we've maybe never seen before. You have to give credit to the voters for keeping the show going in multiple left turns.

I'm still pretty confident, though, that Jordin, Melinda and our other favorites will be fine. I know there's some science behind that DI site, but it's still unreliable. Even so, even Kat checked in via cell phone last year (through friends) who passed on info from that site to her. This, we found out in an interview she did last year. So, there seems to be lots of faith in the process. They did predict the notorious Chris departure last year...which probably gave them the fuel needed to continue being bowed to.

This Sanjaya thing is giving Idol an aura of incredibility and it's being discussed on every daytime talk show on a daily basis. He is a nice boy, but JEEZ, he is a crappy performer and his sets are consistently weak. He has now taken to running around the stage which passes for something that is supposed to be entertainment. What is it going to take to eliminate him? I can't believe he is ahead of Jordin. Insanity!

Sanjaya is ahead of Jordin?????!!!!! Oh my God!! Are they deaf??!!! My God! Sanjaya's performance's a total mess ... jumping around and shouting ... yeah he's a cute guy and all ... but HE CAN'T SING!!!! Man ....

Judging from today's performances, I think the bottom 3 SHOULD be Sanjaya, Phil, and Stephanie. I hope Sanjaya got eliminated. I'm getting tired listening to his singing.

I was thinking that the top 5 should be Melinda, Lakisha, Jordin, Blake and Chris Sligh. There seems to be rampant insanity permeating American Idol audiences, though and it is really difficult to call, especially weeks ago when we picked our top 12. Rosie O'Donnell summed it up today when she said Sanjaya was tone deaf. This kid probably thinks he can be the Idol winner beating out Melinda. I would boycott Idol, but it would be difficult.

Well first of all, a question for everyone. Would you pay money to see any of these folks in concert? I certainly wouldn't. Except maybe Hayley but not necessarity for her singing lol. Obviously Sanjaya SHOULD go home but I don't think he will. If I were to se them for free I woukl leave when he came on but anyway.

IMO the bottow three will be Sanjaya, Phil and Stephanie and they will pull the same thing as last week getting the final 2 as Sanjaya and probably Phil this week. And Phil goes home.

Hey raw numbers on DialIdol have Phil, Stephanie and LAKISHA as the bottom three. So we know how absurd they are at his point.

But it seems that Phil goes home to me and that tour goers will have to put up with seeing possibly the most untalented performer on the most untalented tour yet. Hey I'd rather watch Covais than this kid.

Oh and as far as Blake goes. He is this years One Trick Pony. That was Chris last year so maybe her will sell some records but the beat boxing is so outdated, boring and repetitive right now that he is in danger of turning off alot of people soon. He already has done that to me. What is he going to do next? Throw down a big piece of cardboard and break dance? Oh he alrady did that too in last weeks commercial. Sometime
