Welcome to week 2 of Katharine McPhee's "American Idol" journey from a year ago.

After Katharine's brilliant performance of "Since I Fell For You" last week.  This week Katharine picked "All Is Fair In Love" by Stevie Wonder, who would be on the show to start the final 12 two weeks, and we will have that.

She struggled with the song, but America voted her thru for another week.

What do you remember of that performance?

This performance wasn't received particularly well, but I still love it!!  After she set the bar sky high the previous week with SIFFY it would have been difficult to match that, even though IMO she did recreate the magic of that first performance a few more times throughout the competition...and then some.

Ah, SIFFY. I haven't seen this one in a good long while, and now I remember why. It's probably my least favorite of all of Kat's performances. Not that she did a terrible job singing it, it's just some choices made on the arrangement and the vocals that don't sit right with me. But one advantage of reliving the past is knowing that next week will be considerably better!

Great idea,William!!This was the week when Kat's gorgeousness appeared!I feel Stevie's song really shows off the lyrical beauty of Kat's voice!Quite a strong performance!!And we got to see the mctongue pointing straight at Simon!!!Who else would have the guts to do that??All Is Fair......not with the judges here!!!!!

I still like that performance.

I remember some people started saying said that AI 5 was looking for a male idol. So the guys were doing better that night than the ladies.

Thanks BigShady for the visual. Yeah, it wasn't HER best, mostly in the middle. But it's still better than the other contestants' performances (not that I can remember them which is my point).

Thanks for the great idea of looking back at Kat's Idol Performances in conjunction with this year's show. I have to say that so far, I don't see a lot to look forward to in performances from Season 6...other than 4 or 5 of the ladies. But, none of them compare to the talent of last year, I'm afraid!

You would think that from all of the thousands that "tried out", that there would have been a better pool of talent than what the judges came up with this year. Well, we don't know all of the circumstances, but for me, the competition has lost some sparkle. There's just no one like Katharine, Kellie, Chris, Elliott, Ace, Paris, Madeesa, Lisa, Bucky and Taylor! It was such a balance of music genres that everyone had someone to relate to.

Lakeesha Jones was awesome and I actually liked her performance of that song better than Jennifer Hudson's. It is going to make other perfomances seem anti-climatic. Or with any hope, contestants will rise to the challenge and give us more to cheer for!

Also, I might add 2 others to watch for in season, and this is off topic:
Stephanie Edwards and Melinda Doolittle.

They were both very good on Wednesday.

Thanks, william and Shady...wonderful.

She really displays such beautiful subtlety with her performance...I think that might be missing from this year's group.

After watching the performance and all with the comments, I have to agree the most with Randy. The part the most I agree with is that, no, it wasn't the best performance, but you could see the potential in there. What's funny is that I remember the video of her and Kelly more than I do the actual performance. Some of Kat's loved goofy and silliness came out when they showed the clip and her and Kelly hanging out. Such a cute video. Also, I remember the results and how nervous Katharine was because of the feedback from her performance. I can't believe this was only a year ago. It is interesting though to look back thoroughly each week and then see her perform now. Ah, the memories..

By the way, thank you for creating this, such an awesome idea!! I already know which weeks I'm waiting to comment on.

And here I was watching daredevil athlete skiers skiing down dangerous mountains in the Alps during that time. The Winter Olympics were clobbered by 'AI' in the ratings then, but I was intending to watch 'AI' later on (as I always had) when the real talent was underway. Little did I know that the greatest artist they've ever had on there was emerging already that early. I didn't start watching until the middle of March when Kat was already starting to do a lot of her classic performances. After that, I couldn't believe how good she was and had to head over to the 'AI' board...despite waiting to register until April 6. There was no turning back after joining there.

Thank God for Youtube--and (like the guy or hate him) Rickey.org that helped me catch up on what I missed around that time. Fortunately, I didn't have a whole lot to catch up on when doing that through March and early April last year. Had I not come in until after 'AI' was over (and there are some in the fanbase who did)--it would have been a huge challenge watching everything that came before and putting it in the right context. I'm glad I got immersed in the 'AI' chaos fast on the 'AI' board and was able to be a part of the history that was yet to happen in April and May.

Anyway, I love these threads too--so you can relive what you did during that week. When you get to the March shows, then I can start giving more interesting commentary on what happened on my viewing night parties, voting procedures and situations in that 'AI' board.

On 'All in Love Is Fair': It may not be Kat's best performance--though her vocal quality was already evident enough where you could tell she was going to emerge as something great very soon. It didn't take long for Kat to find her true stage style that I saw in full form by the March shows. She also redeemed herself with a Stevie Wonder song when she sang 'Until You Come Back To Me' on SW night later on. That's still the best performance ever done of that song, in my opinion. I can't wait to talk about that night once it gets here...because that's when Kat's true classic performances began (save her 'GBTC' in auditions).

you know what, this is actually the very very 1st time i saw Kat perform on AI5, i was able to watch SIFFY only the day after i saw her sing All Is Fair In Love.. and to tell you guys honestly, this performance of hers, although not a favorite of the 3 judges, was the reason why i got curious of Kat. it's actually one of my favorite performances of hers honestly, even though it was a low week for her, and she was scared to death at results night. i guess i became fond of her from the video clip she had with Kellie Pickler being her roommate and new-found friend, theyre sooo so cute, theyre like kids gone loose, lol... and then i eventually saw SIFFY on youtube and thought, WOW she's gonna go all the way to the Finale, that's for sure...

haaay, good times... but now is definitely the best times.

What I find especially telling of Kat's talent was that so early on in the process, when she didn't fair as well with this particular song with the judges, and how "over it" people can be on contestants if they do have a misstep that early on, Kat's fans grew and voted her through!

In the weeks to come, she proved her worth and not only showed that song choice seemed to be her strong suit, but that Stevie Wonder songs were no problem.

I just watched this on Divx (tx Vinman), and ok so it wasn't candyman, but it was smooth and elegant. This is where we really saw Kat starting to smoulder on camera, and where the camera guys started to give her those incredible closeups. I saw some of the flashes of intensity that came so much to the fore in IHN, and who can forget the face with the Mctongue at the end. Finally to sum it up Paula said.. you're still a star. I honestly think the judges held Kat to a different standard.

Watch it again. You might change your mind about how good this really was.

Yes she did.  Went last the first week, first the second week.  And as an added bonus this was the week the pregnant rumors started!  Thanks for doing this it's really, really cool to see these again.

KATHARINE’S TOP 10 GIRLS PERFORMANCE

Song: “All In Love Is Fair”
Performed: February 28, 2006

Original Performer: Stevie Wonder
Written By: Stevie Wonder
Year: 1973

PRE-PERFORMANCE

Ryan: Katharine is going to go first with a little Stevie Wonder.

(Camera pans up to Katharine, she waves at camera)

Ryan: But first let’s get that inside scoop. Roll it Bruce.

(Clip of Katharine & Kellie’s relationship plus Katharine’s intro to song)

Katharine: One of the fun, quirky things behind the scenes of American Idol would have to be just Kellie & I having a great time together. (shot of them laughing together in their room) We’re roommates. We are just, each day goes by and we spend more and more time together. We’re getting closer. (shot of Kellie laughing hysterically) And we’re just, like, silly and dumb. (shot of Katharine & Kellie acting silly, making snorting noises) It sounds pretty superficial but we definitely have a fun time just being girls together. Putting on makeup and doing the tanning solution and it’s just nice to have somebody in a competition where you don’t feel like you have to be competitive.

(Clip of Katharine & Kellie hugging each other)

Katharine: I love you.
Kellie: I love you.

(They fall off the side of the bed)

Kellie: Oh God!

KATHARINE’S LYRICS

All is fair in love
Love's a crazy game
Two people vow to stay
In love as one they say
But all is changed with time
The future none can see
The road you leave behind
Ahead lies mystery
But all is fair in love
I had to go away
A writer takes his pen
To write the words again
That all in love is fair

A writer takes his pen
To write the words again
That all in love is fair

POST-PERFORMANCE

Randy: Alright so, you picked kind of a safe choice. Even though some wouldn’t say that Stevie kinda safe but that particular song because it doesn’t have any runs, its kind of a lyric melody but it wasn’t your best performance but you showed a couple of uh shots there that you definitely had it going on. It just wasn’t my best choice of song for you but it was OK man, it was just OK for me.
Katharine (smiling nervously): OK.
Paula: I’m going to agree with Randy in the sense that…you move me, you move America, you um have that innate ability, you are just a gifted artist. It wasn’t a song choice that that just connected with me as much. But let’s, let’s just call it as it is, you’re brilliant. Congratulations for another really nice week.
Katharine: Thank you.
Simon:  On a show like this Katharine, the reality is it is actually more than just singing. It is about personality, it’s about the right choice of song. You can’t come up on the stage like tonight and be in your own world and hope that you are going to interest the American audience. Because they’re going to forget that performance three performances later.
Katharine: OK.
Simon: So not your best night, by a mile.
Randy: Yeah.

Ryan: Katharine McPhee, ladies and gentlemen. You know, Simon mentioned the sort of sum of all parts when it comes to a performance, it’s not just the singing there are a lot of different things that are involved. What is it that you as the performer on the show actually think about? What are all of those parts for you?
Katharine: Um, well I definitely think about, you know, song choice, and what are you gonna wear and how you want to portray the song and um, I don’t know. I, You know I think I sort of felt the same way as I was rehearsing and stuff like that. You know once you make your choice you have to go with it and so I don’t feel, I’m not feeling destroyed or anything like that
Paula: You’re still a star!
Katharine: Thank you!
Simon (mouthing words, mocking Paula): You’re still a star.

(Katharine sticks her tongue out at Simon)

Ryan: And if you’d like to vote for Katharine. 1-866-IDOLS-01, 1-866-436-5701 or Cingular Wireless subscribers can text the word vote to 5701. Remember these are 866 numbers, not 800 numbers please watch where you fingers end up. Alright, well good luck.
Katharine: Thank you.
Ryan: Thank you very much Katharine.

I remember seing the show partly and the people in the room commented that Kat was going to hit it bigger if she didn't have to "scream-like sing" at times" because she didn't have Celine's control. I just told them that she could improve on where she lacks now or overdoes now as the show goes on. But definitely, everyone was smitten with Kat's beauty.
