Well, just remember, this isn't a contest, it's just a forum for sharing ideas and flights of imagination. I haven't read a lot of Idol fan fiction, but I know the expectations and boundaries are different in different places. Just read the guidelines, submit your stuff (I ran mine through bcollan), and see what happens. Not everybody is into fanfic, but I hope those of us who are can have fun with this new development.

I'm having a great time with it and am up to story #4 so far. I work with an editor (one of our members) and try to get things as polished up as possible, check for inconsistencies, etc.  Right now I'm working on one where she's doing her own tour and finding out that it's tough to balance a career  where you belong to everybody and a personal life where you may have to deal with the egos of people who wish you could belong to just one person. And I had to try to figure out what kind of first album she'd do, so I just took off on a total tangent. I'm not predicting, just fantasizing. I don't even have her doing the kind of music I'd really like to hear from her, but it doesn't matter. It's just for fun.

Dive in any time.

Who you talking to?  Hmmmm....couldn't be me, could it?  I know, I know.  It isn't let's see if we can do better than Groucho.  I know.  I need to get back to work on my story.  Since I think it needs to be up before your #4 for one part to make sense.  I'll do it tomorrow.  I promise.  I just feel like I'm going to be taking a hatchet to it and I'm delaying the hatcheting process.

You are?  Cool.  I don't want it to be just Groucho and myself.  I actually need to think of something new to work on.  Although it's going to be hard given that I've committed myself to doing a project for the Katpedia.  I'll get something else done eventually.

Oh, I'm just expressing my inner grouch. Or maybe that's my inner romantic coming out. Or my inner Rod Serling or something...

The funniest things will give me story ideas. I got fascinated trying to figure out what a tour bus would look like, so I set about finding out, and it was amazing the things I turned up. One thing led to another and it all turned into a story. Then I got carried away reading all the accounts of the Homecoming Project, and the frustration with how it turned out, and that turned into a story so i could tweak reality a little and make it work out better for a few people, anyway. Somebody once said that everyone has at least one novel in them. Maybe everyone here has at least one short story in them somewhere.

Aww, thanks Bill.  So I guess I'm pretty good?  Really?  I was so worried.  As for story ideas...Groucho's just a stealer.  I'm the creative one.

Who?  Greg?  Heh.  Well...my story needed some help and you provided that so...

Anyway...write people, write!  I know it isn't something you can just do in 15 minutes but...when you get done doing one of these you'll feel great about it.  Especially if you have kind people telling you it is really good.  That's a nice bonus.

We all steal from one another...which makes no true best.  Remember that old phrase "If you steal from one person, you're a thief...but if you steal from everyone...it's research?" We all pass around the same $25, which is our word use fee around here.

I, for one, still believe there's some untapped ideas in writing and the overall creative world. But it's probably within complicated realms that average audiences don't want to gravitate to. Instead, you just have to take things already done and mold it into something that looks halfway original. I think most creativity today that's reasonably accessible to the average public are just amalgams of everything that came before. Even Shakespeare took from writers before him. So there's no real writer that started everything...other than God Himself.

I'm still on the search for finding completely new ideas that are accessible to everybody. So far, I haven't found it--though I have some things under wraps that may be something close if it ever gets published in the bigtime. And I'm working all the time on that...

From my standpoint, I'll probably avoid serialized forms in this forum. It's better for me to give stand-alone snapshots of a new idea. Because that's how I usually work in writing: Supplying ideas (and ideas within the ideas) while you're being entertained. Though my ideas may be speculative--hopefully they're still understandable in theory.

Kat can be applied on such an all-encompassing scale that she's really the perfect real-life character to use for a creative writer.

Is that the smiley version of the Sistine Chapel ceiling where the finger of God touches Adam? Only I don't think it makes his little eyeballs go round and round... or who knows, maybe it did...

The Pope would have fired Michelangelo if he ever came up with a design similar to the crude art we use on the net every day. Though I heard he actually had something else in mind...and was recently transcribed from codes even Michelangelo managed to incorporate into his paintings. This shows that Da Vinci wasn't the only one to put codes in his works...

Anyway, all kidding aside--here's a notice that I've finished my fanfic and want to send it to Bill. However, I can't see where you can send things as attachments on emails routed through KMF. So should I just go ahead and cut and paste the text into the crude email system through your profile, Bill--or send it to you via a legit email service that allows for attachments?

Edit: I'm just going to go ahead and send it via cut and paste, Bill. If that's not preferable--then I'll send it again as an attachment through other means...

I just was gonna say...

Yes, that should be mindspring. So I'll send it via mindspring.com, Bill...with the assumption that's right. Hopefully you got my cut and pasted version last night though. But it may have come out garbled as Word files sometimes do on certain email systems.

I think mindpring is some other company that likes to play with your mind. A mind pring sounds like something planted in our heads against our will.

Looking forward to seeing how this fanfic goes over, Groucho. It is a bit long (nine pages on Word)--though it turned out a lot better than I thought it would. And there's NO mention of Proust in it. Just a slight inspiration with the final idea from the hack French writer.

Nine pages ain't long.
Is a "mindPRING" what happens in your head when you walk into a restaurant and you hear KT Tunstall going "Woo hoo!" over the speaker system, and something in there says "Attention! Kat-related item approaching!"

Thanks to Bill for giving the approval on my fanfic tonight. I also posted it all in one post rather than multiple posts. At first I thought there was a word limitation per post, but it all fit in there just fine with better spacing between paragraphs than what you even get on Word.

I'm glad to hear Groucho say nine pages isn't too long. In the age of quick text bites--this one may have to be digested in one page chapter breaks as others have done with the other fanfics here. But I originally intended to keep it to around five or six pages. Then it turned into this magnum opus...

Looks like my little twist in this thing worked for Bill. Let me know what you think of everything else though. It's my strange attempt to put Katharine into a potentially real macrocosmic situation rather than a microcosmic one. Though there's microcosmic moments within the macrocosmic situation. I guess it's good to think big and small all at the same time sometimes...

Nine pages on Word?  That isn't long Greg...my "4 K's" was 12 pages...I think the two stories Groucho's posted so far are 12 & 13 pages respectively.  And the other one I've seen is 17 pages at last check.

Initially "4 K's"...well it had a different name before I rearranged it.  It was 17 pages...it was reduced to 12 in the editing, rewriting process.

I have so much happening in mine--it probably gives the illusion of being longer. Perhaps I should break it up into different posts so there can be chapter breaks if people need that.  But it was easier just to cut and paste the whole thing in one post.

Anyway, maybe some people are turned off by the fact that we witness Katharine on her deathbed at the end--but it gives us a chance to see a full arc of her life that way and put everything in a much larger context. I usually think that way about her career anyway and the profound reach she could potentially have. And, the best thing is that Katharine's life and career is quasi all-encompassing--so there's plenty of material to mine out of what's already happened or could potentially happen.

I have a new idea for a second fanfic that will be the exact opposite of this first one and maybe a concept that hasn't been done before in this genre. It'll also be a lot lighter than this first one. I wanted to make this first one much more comedic--but only the scene with the millionaires was even halfway that.

Let me know any comments or criticisms you may have on the first story. And, I want to catch up on the ones here by others I haven't commented on yet. I'll get on to reviewing your Rainbowland II, Groucho, by tomorrow.

I'm going to start numbering titles (Rainbowland II, III, etc.) so if anyone stops by, they can figure out that they're sequential. It always helps if a character has been introduced in a previous story. In fact I got Joe all confused by introducing a new character in III (The Kat Who Came Home), so I had to rewrite the first page. Since I tend to write in first person, the character just starts talking. You wouldn't think to introduce yourself if you were just talking, would you? In third person, you'd say "Chris McDonald did thus and such," but when you're your own narrator, you just start talking. A good editor, or just a pal doing a preliminary run-through, can be a BIG HELP.

Greg!  AHHHH!  I haven't read your story yet!  Now I know too much!  Well no, but that stunned me.  She's on her deathbed?  I gotta see how we get to that point now...

Um, but yeah it is good to have someone else read these things before you go public with them because...you miss things sometimes.  I mean YOU know what's you are saying but maybe it doesn't come out clearly for someone who isn't inside your head.

So just having someone to ask questions about what you were intending in certain parts is nice.  And then you can either make adjustments or not based on that.  It is YOUR story after all.  Anyway, I guess I should get on reading your story Greg...since you probably want to know what I think since I'm one of the people involved with this whole thing on here.  And you did say a lot of nice things about mine so...I could at least do you that courtesy.

^The death bed device is only one small element at the end, Joe--so you'll hopefully get a lot out of that one. I also have a twist that might want to make you go back and read it again in order to have a different perspective. After you read it, it'll probably feel like you've just read 'War and Peace.' I have a lot going on in each paragraph. But take your time reading. Thankfully, these aren't limited edition pieces that are here for only two weeks...before moving on to the next Fanfic forum.

Well, that's my usual style of writing in the real world. I usually try to put everything in there in an attempted slightly smaller space. Believe it or not, the novels I've finished are novelettes rather than giant mammoth novels that go on for 1,000 pages. All are around 220 pages at the most--yet pack a lot of  important material in there.

I agree with the editing feature for those first-person accounts in fanfics. I did have a few close family members and friends read this before submitting, and they thought it worked well without any drastic cuts. There was temptations by me to add even more material--but we really have to try to make these as tight as possible. Just get a lot of good ideas and try to incorporate them into the story without any extensive elaborations as you'd have in a novel.

You may see a lot of weaknesses in this first one anyway. Feel free to say so--because I value educated feedback.

As I said before, I do have a lot of ideas for more of these things. The next one will be the antithesis to this first one...without wanting to give anything away.

Somewhere maybe we should have a guideline about spoilers. It's just something you don't necessarily think about unless you've had it called to your attention. Some sites threaten you with all kinds of horrid things if you post spoilers without warning. No, i'm not suggesting threats. it's just easy to get enthused and start spouting all kinds of stuff without thinking that not everyone has read the stuff yet.

A random thought just popped into my head. Why are we all giving Katharine all these little fantasy daughters? Is it because of those cute videos of her and Adriana as children? Naw, couldn't be that.

Well...sure.  Taylor's allowed to be in stories.  There's no rules against that.  I think the "rules" are posted in the main section of the Fan Fiction Section here.  You can do whatever you want with these as far as the people involved.  Some of the things you could have them doing is restricted but...feel free to include anybody you'd like.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.
